Kamera Klutz and the Gray Card

The light gray card was given to us by the photography instructor. As you can see, it is lighter than the standaard 18% gray in the darker card. More important, is that the light card is also somewhat opaque and lightens even more in the bright sun. When used to meter outdoor, the pictures turned out consistently underexposed.

Hoppy Easter...

Kamera Klutz: Kolor and Kelvin

Lights have different colors depending on the temperature of the light. Within a given day, the lighting color changes.

Indoor lights have different colors as well: fluorescent and incandescent.

White balance is adjusted to accommodate the differences in lighting and color.

Kamera Klutz: Sunny 16

When making photos outdoors, try the sunny 16 rule rather than the grey card.

f 16     ISO 200     shutter speed 200

Bracket using the sunny 16 rule as the initial setting.

Kamera Klutz; Indoor Settings

To keep the color pure and bright; settings must be adjusted.

Two different studio lights were used. The halogen lights created the warmer colore and the LED lights produced the cooler colors.

Kamera Klutz: Keep your Eyes Open!

As part of the photography class, my photo buddy and I made a tenative list of places to go and make photos. While making photos of construction sites, we came upon an unexpected opportunity. The train came and went before we could set up for photos. We will go back.

Kamera Klutz and the Common Man

These photos remind me of the works of Degas, the artist, who celebrated everyday life in many of his paintings.

The nice aspect of this photo session is that I was able to use a 200mm lens. I love the contrast of colors. It is also interesting that many of the men are watching the few that actually seem to be working.

Kamera Klutz and Making Photographs Outdoors

If you are planing an outdoor photo session. Some of the settings can be done before leaving the house--in a nice climate controlled environment where one can sit and refer to the manual as needed.

ISO 100-200
white balance---daylight
RAW plus large JPEG
Color   Adobe RGB 1998
lens
manual or auto mode

This leaves changing the shutter speed and aperture depending on the desired effect. Also the focal length can be changed as well as the focus-manual or auto.

Kamera Klutz and Attempts at Manual Focus

These two photos demonstrate differences in depth of field. The first one shows the background in clear focus and the foreground is blurred and the second shows the background blurred and the foreground in focus. The towers in the back  of the top photo were focused manually and therefore the focus is still a little off. The towers are not very crisp.
